My Visit To Restaurants Serving Continental Food In Kolkata

Gone are the times when Bengali food culture would just be about venturing into avenues leading to fish fry and kobiraji, cutlet and egg roll. Trying out continental dishes is equally in vogue among the Bengali crowd in Kolkata and that’s why there are many good restaurants offering delicious continental fare to cater to the cravings of the Kolkatan foodies’ taste buds.

While there are countless restaurants that offer exquisite continental food, I have narrowed down my list to the ones that I have visited. Check them out:

Located centrally in Ballygunge area, Spice Kraft is a heaven for continental food lovers. While some of the most innovative starters with an elegant presentation include Beer-Can Tempura Fish, Dajaj Chermoula, Bacardi Limon Infused Tandoori Chicken Sausage and Fish Papaloita, the main course is often dominated by dishes like Shepherd’s Pie, Baked Fish Wellington and Chicken Stoganoff. Courteous staff, elegant decor, lovely ambience and novel menu are some of the factors that make Spice Kraft so popular. The bill amount may go up to Rs 1600-1800 for two people (only if you stick to their food and choose to exclude those enticing cocktails and drinks)

Located in South City Mall in Prince Anwar Shah Road, Kolkata, Cafe Mezzuna is a happening spot with nice and cosy ambience and music. The Beer Batter Fish is drool-worthy. Hot Pan Grilled Mushrooms with Chilli Garlic Lemon, Chicken Stroganoff With Herbed Rice, Chicken Stroganoff and Grilled Prawn Skewers are some of the popularly ordered and unanimously relished dishes in this place that offers a range of delectable continental food. A full-course meal at Cafe Mezzuna would cost around Rs 1700-1800 for two people.

If you wish to taste some fish and chips or a crust of Margherita pizza or a flaming pot of Spring Chicken Sizzler while enjoying a casual dining ambience and some music, Hoppipola is the place for you! I have been to the outlet in Acropolis Mall in Kasba area and I liked it. You can even order a glass of your favourite cocktail and the cost for two would approximately be around Rs 2000/-

Chili’s Grill and Bar offers an elaborate continental menu. You can choose from a variety of burgers and American, Mexican and Italian dishes. From Fajitas to Quesadillas, choose anything to suit your taste bud. Chicken steak, Fish and Chips, Herbed Fish Fillets, Cajun Pasta, Red Chili Bhetki- you have options galore! Pocket pinch is around Rs 1300- 1400 for two (for food only)

This place is a favourite haunt of youngsters, mostly college going students, for its cosy ambience, homely environment and board games. Though options are limited (in fact most of the items mentioned in the menu card were not available when I went there), it serves delicious Continental food, salads and Italian cuisine. The food was tasty but the quantity wasn’t a value for money. I tasted their BBQ chicken wings with herbed rice and grilled chicken. I tried their Royal Carnivore union with sausages, poached eggs, grilled fish and sautéed vegetables- everything served on the same platter with a cheese-garlic dip. Cost for two is around Rs 1000.

Scoop features as one of the best known dine-outs for ice-cream treats. However, I happened to taste some their continental food and liked them too. You wouldn’t be disappointed, no matter what you choose to order-whether it’s the Chicken Steak or Veg Au-Gratin, Fish Sizzler or Enthu Cutlets. Good food, convenient location and vibrant ambience are mostly liked by the visitors here. It’s a good spread at Rs 1000 for two people.

P.S.- I have deliberately kept Mocambo and Peter Cat out of the list. These are legendary outlets that have stood the test of time. In fact, they are among the pioneers in the field of serving Continental food in Kolkata in the form of Chelo Kebabs and Sizzlers. They feature as top iconic restaurants that make Park Street a foodies’ paradise.
