Is It Dandruff Or Scalp Psoriasis?


Scalp psoriasis is chronic skin condition which is apparently very similar to dandruff. Thus, next time when you have white flakes scattered all over your scalp or you have an itching sensation all day long, keep in mind that it may not necessarily be dandruff!

  • Mix jojoba oil and Aloe Vera in equal quantities and massage your scalp with this mixture before you go to bed.
  • Opt for a shampoo which contains jojoba extracts.
  • Avoid using hot water while you wash your scalp. Use cold water or lukewarm water instead.
  • Incorporate the daily use a hair-product which contains Dead Sea Salt in it.
  • Massage warm olive oil to your scalp at night, followed by shampooing your hair (preferably with a shampoo containing wheat germ oil).
  • Mix pure Aloe Vera gel with garlic oil and this mixture has to be massaged into your scalp before bedtime. Shampoo your hair next morning.
  • Dilute apple cedar vinegar in water and apply it on your scalp. It is known to soothe infections and inflammations.

Food Items You Should Take– Raw food, fruits, vegetables and grains should be there in your anti-psoriasis diet. You must include healthy fats, complex carbohydrates and lean proteins. Having fatty fish like albacore tuna and salmon, low-fat soy, avocados, leafy vegetables, berries and legumes are known to help a lot.

Food Items You Should Avoid– Dark meat, processed red meat, eggplants, egg yolks, heavy cream, whole milk, cheese, condiments and carbohydrates like cereals, pasta and bread are known to worsen the condition. Stay away from nuts like peanuts, hazel nuts and walnuts, alcoholic beverages and citrus fruits like lemons, bitter lemons, limes and grapefruits.



  • Medicated Shampoo- If scalp psoriasis is very mild, it can be treated with medicated shampoos that contain salicylic acid.
  • Anti-microbial Medication- In case of a moderate scalp psoriasis, anti-microbial medications are used.
  • Steroids- The physician may opt for steroid medications in case of severe cases. The steroids are directly injected in the scalp. This however may have many side-effects and thus, it is better to go for other alternatives.
  • Ultraviolet light treatments- This mode of treatment, with the help of specially devised UV combs, is gaining popularity.

Other viable options of treatment include systematic medications, mentholated treatments and prescription medication. It is advised that you consult with a renowned doctor before you avail any of these treatments, if you are suffering from an acute case of scalp psoriasis. However, the best part is that both dandruff and scalp psoriasis are curable if treated in time and treated properly.
