The Benefits Of Travelling

‘BEYOND the East the sunrise, beyond the West the sea,
And East and West the wander-thirst that will not let me be;
It works in me like madness, dear, to bid me say good-bye;
For the seas call, and the stars call, and oh! the call of the sky!’

These lines that form the first stanza of Gerald Gould’s well-known poem- ‘Wander Thirst’ perfectly sum up my feelings when it comes to travelling.  I know I share this love for travelling with hundreds and thousands of others across the world. But did you know that travelling has a number of benefits and once you start travelling, you too will be a part of this soothing, healing and therapeutic practice? So, check out the wonderful benefits of travelling so that you can always convince yourself to go on a vacation whenever you have the time and money!

  1. NO WORRIES: Travelling helps you forget your worries for a few days/weeks and get de-linked for the daily chores and problems that you have to put up with. Lose yourself in the beautiful and luxuriant valleys of Araku or the magnificent range of Kanchenjunga; it helps you forget those deadlines at office or complications of relationships like never before!
  2. STRESS BUSTER: Whether you choose to spend a few days in the exotic beaches Goa or those profound hills of Sikkim, it induces relaxation like never before. Neither chocolates nor cigarettes work better as a stress buster! Take to travelling for de-stressing and perhaps you will never have to give up this addiction.
  3. FALL IN LOVE WITH HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY: If Social Sciences have been the subjects of your hatred, travelling would offer a whole new perspective to them. Unravel History with the beautiful Konarak Temple, Sanchi Stupa or Hawa Mahal. Geography seems so much more interesting with the flavours of tea gardens of Darjeeling and the grandeur of the Stalactites and Stalagmites of Mawsmai Caves. Travelling is surely the best form of education.
  4. WIDEN YOUR MENTAL HORIZON: Wish to widen your mental horizon? Travelling works wonders. Experiencing the variety of cultures and ways of life would not only broaden your perspective but will also increase your knowledge.Enjoy the flavour of local food, live among local people, understand their culture and you are a different person altogether!
  5. OVERCOME RIGIDITY: Rigidity is a common trait of human nature. However, travelling enables you to overcome stringency and embrace flexibility. There are times when you cannot stick to your routine and priorities while travelling. You have to overcome several hurdles too! There could be rescheduling of train timings, unavailability of occupancy, inadequacy of funds and inability to put up with the stress of sightseeing; however, you learn to face the trickiest of situation with a smile on your face. You tend to rediscover yourself and the values that lay buried deep in you.

Travelling offers a whole new purpose to your life. Planning a trip gives immense pleasure and saving money for a journey is always so rewarding as an experience. Whether you go on a solo trip or travel with your friends, family or spouse, travelling is always a refreshing and rejuvenating experience.
