How to Get Rid of Dandruff – 3 Easy Ways

I’m going to pull a Jon Snow here and remind everyone “Winter is coming” (Admit it, you read that with a Kit Harington voice over!   ). Sad thing is, however amazing it sounds when Jon Snow says it, winter is something I absolutely dread. Chapped lips, dry patchy skin, a million layers of clothes and the worst of them all, dandruff!!

It was quite a couple of years back when I had a terrible time combating dandruff and trying to keep my mane sane (now that rhymes!  ). My hair was limp, dry and the dandruff looked like bits of ash all over my head. Nothing seemed to work. It was only then that I found a few reliable ways to not just get rid of dandruff but also keep it at bay and going berserk again.

Here are my three ways of getting rid of dandruff-

3) The Easy Temporary Option

Head and Shoulders is a tried and tested brand and it pretty much suits everyone in my family. While it does not really meet up to its claim of getting you free from dandruff entirely, it is quite a reliable way to quickly get rid of dandruff for a day or two before it appears again. I have an oily scalp and straight hair, I love using the Cool Menthol variant which gives my hair a squeaky clean feeling with a soft lingering smell. Don’t forget to use the conditioner of your choice after shampooing your hair.

Price and Availability – Rs 250 for 340 ml

Easily available at local drugstores, retailers and online.

2) The Tough and Long Lasting Option

Selsun Selenium Sulfide Topical Suspension USP from Pfizer Limited was suggested by my friend’s dermatologist when she had a bout of Tinea Versicolor. I was checking the bottle and I found that it can be used for treating dandruff as well. I used it only once and was amazed at how perfectly clean and dandruff-less my hair was for the next three-four weeks. This not just removed the dandruff but stopped it for coming back for a very long time.

How to Apply- Wash your hair well and give the scalp a little rub to remove the oil sticking to it. Then take a coin sized amount of the shampoo and dilute it with water and apply it all over your scalp. Rub your scalp well for 4-5 to loosen the settled dandruff. This doesn’t lather much, so don’t worry if you don’t see any. Wash your hair well to get rid of all of it and apply a heavy duty scented conditioner. Use once every two-three weeks depending on how bad your problem is. I personally use it only once a month now since my problem has reduced considerably.

Since this contains Selenium Sulfide, it has a very pungent and unpleasant smell and weird colour that many may despise. I used to find the smell really awful but I needed to get rid of the dandruff, so gave it a shot. Your hair will retain the chemical smell for almost an entire day even if you use a perfumed conditioner, so you might want to use it on a day you plan to stay indoors and apply a scented conditioner liberally after use. The smell however fades the next day. My hair did not feel brittle or dry after use.

CAUTION- This is a heavy duty dandruff remover and it should NOT be used in excess or too frequently. Also I would suggest you ask your dermatologist if you also have a hairfall problem or brittle hair before using this. If you are very sensitive to strong chemical odours, you might want to stay away from this.

Price and Availability – I bought this last year and it cost me Rs. 205 for 120 ml (This lasts forever). The price might have increased slightly now.

Easily available at local chemists.

1) The Natural and Effective Option–

If you’re somebody who hates using heavy duty chemicals or SLS laden products on your hair, then this is your best bet at getting rid of dandruff naturally. This is the product which helped me at the time I was going bonkers trying to make my hair look like it belonged to a human.

The product that will get your hair rid of every speck of dandruff and make it shiny, smooth and frizz-free is Rice water. Yes, you read that right, that water that you discard daily at home after cooking rice is in fact a magic potion albeit with a funny smell. Like every natural remedy, this takes a few uses to show the best results but you will feel the effect after a single wash and how amazingly soft and healthy your hair feels after you use it to clean your hair. 

How to Apply- You can obtain rice water by draining the excess water after boiling your rice. Remember to wash and clean your grains before boiling the rice. Cool this starch suspension and apply it all over your scalp and hair, gently massaging it. Now wear a shower cap to prevent the rice water from drying too fast. (Always cover your hair with a shower cap every time you apply a hair pack or apply henna to your hair to avoid it from drying. Fellow blogger and friend, Shayoni had told me that it prevents your hair from becoming brittle and dry after washing it off. Best tip anybody ever gave me!) Keep this on your hair for around 1-1.5 hours and then wash it off by massaging your hair and scalp to get rid of the sediments properly.

You can add a few drops of essential oil like lavender or tea tree if you find the smell annoying. Apply a mild shampoo and conditioner if you want. The starchy smell stays on for almost a day if you don’t add essential oil. So, you might want to use this if you don’t plan to step out for the day. This method tames your tray hairs like no other and you can use it often as you please because it is entirely natural. I go back to this reliable and foolproof method when winters arrive. You can also use the excess rice water to wash your face, it doubles up as a fabulous toner for your skin.

So, those were my tried and tested methods to be dandruff free through out the year. What are yours? Let me know in the comments below. 
