A Day At Mankhim

BY SOMREETA MUKHERJEE

Mankhim is a scenic hilltop destination. Its panoramic view of the green mountains, the exotic birds, the tranquil emerald waters of Aritar Lake, the serene Lampokhri Monastery and the distant temple located on the top of the mountain is surely an experience away from the din of city life. We stayed for a day at Mankhim while traversing along the Silk Route Sikkim. We drove to Mankhim from Nathang Valley.

We had booked our rooms at a home-stay called the Kanchendzonga Mirror. Our room was located along a terraced roof from where the beauty of the magnificent range of Kanchenjunga was clearly visible.

The twirling clouds, the golden rays being reflected on the white sheets of ice, the sky being transformed from grey to violet, then orange and finally to a bright shade of blue- we savoured every moment while sipping on our cup of steaming tea at the terrace, early in the morning.

Weather was pleasantly cool in the month of October. It was neither warm nor very cold.

Aritar Lake with its placid waters is a must-visit. If you want, you can also go boating across the green waters of the lake, nestled among the mountains. The lake is bordered with properly maintained sidewalks that enable you to walk effortlessly around the circuit of the water.

Lampokhari Monastery is a beautiful monastery painted with murals and enriched with its store of Buddhist artifacts. A stroll along the premises of the monastery is a rejuvenating experience.

The temple located on the top of the mountains was only a few steps away from the homestay. Time and again we would take the staircase to this paradise from where we would get an uninterrupted view of Mankhim. Aritar Lake was also visible from there. The temple would be taken care of by a couple who helped us with the rituals and we offered our prayers. These simple people of the hills are so close to nature, hence, so close to God.

Mankhim’s beauty will forever be etched in my memories. A perfect place for quiet contemplation, this serene destination in the lap of the hills is going to transform any ordinary man into a poet!
