Dimer Khichuri (Egg Khichdi): Recipe


It has been raining incessantly in Kolkata. Now, the magic of Kolkata rains is incomplete without a hot and steaming bowl of delicious khichuri. That is why, we have Dimer Khichuri or Egg Khichdi for lunch today. Wish to know the recipe? Keep reading!


COOKING TIME: 30 minutes


  • Rice (1 cup): 200 g (not boiled, preferably Gobindobhog rice)
  • Masoor dal (1 cup): 200 g
  • Eggs: 2
  • Bay leaves: 2
  • Jeera: 1 tablespoon
  • Dry red chillies: 2
  • Onions (large): 2 (roughly and finely chopped)
  • Ginger: 1 ½ tablespoon (shredded)
  • Garlic- 1 tablespoon (shredded)
  • Garam masala powder: 1 tablespoon
  • Jeera powder: 1 tablespoon
  • Turmeric- ½ teaspoon
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar: 1 tablespoon
  • Cooking oil- 3 tablespoon
  • Ghee- 1 tablespoon
  • Coriander leaves: a few sprigs
  • Green chillies- 3
  • Drinking water: 3 cups



  • Wash the rice and dal thoroughly in running water. Set aside.


  • Whip the eggs and a pinch of salt in a bowl.


  • Heat ½ tablespoon oil on a tawa and spread out as an omelette.


  • Fry it and then shred it into small pieces. Set aside.


  • In a kadhai, heat 2½ tablespoon oil and add bay leaves, jeera and dry chillies.


  • When the aroma is nice, add onions, green chillies, ginger and garlic. Fry them together.


  • When the colour turns brownish, add turmeric, jeera powder, garam masala powder, salt and sugar. Add the fried egg pieces. Sauté. Keep the flame low.



  • After about 5 minutes, add the rice and dal and mix well with the spices. Add coriander leaves.


  • Now, pour all the ingredients in a pressure cooker.


  • Add adequate water and seal the lid.
  • Cook on medium flame for about 3 whistle, which shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes.


  • Keep the lid intact for another 5-10 minutes, release the pressure. Add ghee for that mouth-watering aroma.
  • You may garnish with some fresh green coriander leaves, fried eggs and green chillies. Serve it hot with alu bhaja and masala papad.
