KALIMPONG: Places To Visit

Kalimpong, located in the Darjeeling district in the state of West Bengal,India, lies at an altitude of about 5000 feet. Weather is pleasant and is therefore a hot spot for tourists, especially the ones who cannot put up with extremely cold weather or high altitude and yet love to visit the hills. Situated at a relatively lower height as compared to Gangtok or Darjeeling, Kalimpong is a wonderful destination and you get to enjoy the view of the Kanchenjunga, verdant greenery and breath-taking landscapes.

DURPIN MONASTERY: It is beautiful monastery situated at Durpin Dara hill. Peaceful and holy, this monastery is unique because it allows you to follow the stairway that flanks the side of the monastery and reach right up to the open terrace on the second floor!

Shrouded by clouds, the terrace offers an amazing experience and beautiful view of green landscape and mountains.

HANUMAN TEMPLE and DURGA MANDIR: The temple has a gigantic statue of lord Hanuman and you can feelthat sense of awe when you see it standing 30-feet tall! In fact, it is also known to be one of the largest statues in the North East region of India.

A few yards away, there is the temple of Goddess Durga, located in the middle of a well-maintained garden. It is lovely to hear the chiming of bells and chanting of prayers in this temple of the goddess of powder.

DELLO HILL: Dello is the highest spot in the town of Kalimpong. It is almost like a huge (about eight acres domain) picnic spot and if you wish to ride horse or take part in sports and activities, feel free to indulge in them all! It is a park that has lodging facilities too and a multi-cuisine restaurant is also there. Walk up to the various view-points and enjoy splendid views of the town, Teesta river, Relli valley and the luxuriant green along the slopes.

As a visitor, you will have to shell out Rs 10 as an entry fee. You can also munch on spicy puffed rice (masala muri) and phuchkas available near the main gate.

Dr. Graham's Home

GRAHAM’S HOME: It is missionary school established by Dr John Anderson Graham. He tried focusing on the education of Anglo-Indian orphans and also the children of poor locals with British association.

Way back in 1900, the school (then known as St Andrews Colonial and Industrial Settlement) started with thirty-five orphans and one cottage. Now, the school has a church, at least 50 cottages, well-furnished classrooms, buildings, playground and even residential facilities.

It is huge, sprawling campus along the surging slopes with greenery all around. Children from far and near come to study in this school now.

ARMY GOLF COURSE: The army golf course is located enroute to Durpin monastery. Located at an elevation of 4000 feet, the golf course is beautifully drafted in the hilly terrains. Surely pay a visit to enjoy the view.

CACTUS NURSERY: Floriculture has evolved in Kalimpong over the years. In fact, you get to see a variety of flowers in and around the length and breadth of Kalimpong. However, you would surely enjoy your visit to the cactus nursery to see hundreds of types of cactus plants.

I did not have the faintest idea about the variety of cactus before I visited the nursery at Kalimpong. You need to see them to believe that they exist!

Wish to take a break and visit Kalimpong? Board a train to New Jalpaiguri or take a flight to Bagdogra and hire a cab. You can also take an auto rickshaw to Siliguri and then, book a seat in shared taxis that ply regularly to Kalimpong. Try incorporating Lava, Loleygaon and Rishyap in your itinerary while planning a tour to Kalimpong. So pack your bags and start travelling because travelling is the best medicine for tired souls.
