TASTY DAHI BHINDI RECIPE

Wish to go green with your curries this summer? Prepare this delicious dahi bhindi or okra cooked in thick yogurt gravy. This okra recipe is extremely easy to prepare. This tasty curry is healthy too. Have some fresh green okra in your vegetable basket? Get them transformed into this appetizing dish in the next 20 minutes!

TASTY DAHI BHINDI RECIPE

(OKRA COOKED IN THICK AND LUSCIOUS YOGHURT GRAVY)

 

PREPARATION TIME: 5 minutes

COOKING TIME: 15 minutes

LIST OF INGREDIENTS:

Okra: 250 grams (small to medium sized pods)

Yogurt: 8-10 tablespoons

Jeera powder: 1 ½ tablespoon

Dhaniya powder: 1 ½ tablespoon

Turmeric powder: ½ teaspoon

Black pepper powder: 1 teaspoon

Sugar: 1 teaspoon

Salt to taste

Cooking oil: 1 tablespoon

Tomato- optional (cut into thin pieces, for garnishing)

 

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS

1. Wash okra thoroughly in running water and chop the heads off the pods. Cut the okras into 1 inch long pieces.

2. Heat cooking oil in a non-stick kadhai and shallow fry the okra pieces over low flame for about 4-5 minutes.

3. Add jeera powder, dhaniya powder, turmeric powder and salt to the fried okra pieces and sauté for 3 minutes.

4. Add yoghurt into the kadhai and stir well to make consistently smooth gravy.

5. Add black pepper powder and sugar to the yoghurt gravy and cook for about 7-8 minutes.

6. As soon as the thin water content dries up and the gravy becomes thick, turn the flame off.

7. The rich and spicy yoghurt gravy tends to stick on the soft green okra pieces. Add a hint of bright red to this green okra curry by garnishing it with slender portions of chopped tomato.

Serve this luscious dahi bhindi preparation with chapatti or roti.

 

I love cooking and eating dahi bhindi. I learnt this version of cooking okra in yoghurt gravy from my mother. Yoghurt imparts richness to this preparation. The sour and sweet taste that soaks into the soft and succulent pieces of okra caters perfectly to your taste buds. Prepare it whenever you don’t feel like getting into the elaborate procedure of food preparation and yet cook something healthy and savoury in a matter of 15 minutes!
